BELA’s academic institute ‘Mymensingh College of Physiotherapy and Health Sciences’ provide an educational program for obtaining B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy.

 

Overview:

In Bangladesh this is the renowned university-approved 5 year bachelor of Occupational Therapy (including 1 year mandatory internship) professional program which is affiliated by faculty of medicine, University of Dhaka. Each year is divided into 2 semesters of 23 weeks each. The subjects studied on the course needs a broad range of skills in order to succeed. The program is conducted in English, although clinical work is carried out in the clients’ own language, Bangla. Successful completion of the program indicates professional competence to practice as a Occupational Therapist in Bangladesh. The curriculum includes both theoretical classroom based learning and practical experience in a variety of settings in the health, education and rehabilitation sectors with in Bangladesh.

Programme Aims and Objectives

Program Aims:

The overall aim of the programme is to produce competent Occupational Therapists, who have the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills to provide a range of rehabilitation services to people with communication disabilities and their families. They will also have the skills to raise the level of awareness and knowledge about communication disabilities in the wider community in Bangladesh.

  • To provide a framework that allows for the development of core skills in Occupational Therapy.
  • To develop the skills of problem solving and holistic thinking required to enable students to practice Occupational Therapy with limited resources and supervision.
  • To encourage questioning, creativity and critical thinking that will enable graduates to develop self-reliance and become constructive contributors within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • To provide opportunity for the development of clinical and reasoning skills, that will enable graduates to practice safely and effectively within a working environment.
  • To develop values and attitudes consistent with high standards of ethical and professional conduct.
  • To develop a sense of responsibility to the provision and promotion of Occupational Therapy and wider health services in Bangladesh; including undertaking research and training roles and contributing towards education policies of the profession in Bangladesh.
  • To develop management skills to enable graduates to manage themselves, their peers and those under their supervision in an effective and sensitive manner.

 

Objectives:

At the end of the programme and on qualifying, the OT will be able to:

  • Explain and critically evaluate the theoretical principles on which the practice of OT is based.
  • Assess the skills, difficulties and needs of individuals and their families, using core knowledge and skills as appropriate.
  • Refer individuals to other agencies for services, as appropriate, and to be proactive in communicating with these other agencies.
  • Plan and implement intervention programmes as appropriate, taking into account each individual’s needs and context.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of their intervention programmes and modify or terminate these as necessary.
  • Use appropriate methods of recording and communicating information on assessment results, interventions, progress and outcomes. (Skills are required for communicating these both to individuals and their families, as well as at a service provision level).
  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in related services (in health, education, social services and NGO sectors), and to recognize their goals and priorities.
  • Promote good health and prevention of illness and disability related to their area of knowledge, through educational and awareness activities for a range of participants in work and community settings.
  • Demonstrate activities which will lead to continuing personal and professional development and which will contribute to the advancement of the OT profession.
  • Respect the rights of all individuals and abide by the code of professional ethics.

Admission:
Usually the admission circular available in website, Newspaper, Facebook and the notice board of the institute.   

Application requirement:
The applicant must have passed the S.S.C. and H.S.C or the examination of equal status in science group with biology, physics, and chemistry without any grace mark or improvement and have to secure the grade point 8 (Eight). The candidate must have minimum grade point 3.50 (three point five) separately.

Admission test and interview: 

Students have to appear in admission test which is usually held in campus.  After qualifying the admission test a candidate will have to undergo medical and physical examination by the medical board. Then, the medical board will give medical certificate on which his/her admission shall be decided. Students, on the basis of merit in admission test and medical certificate will be selected as successful candidate. Thus he/ she will be nominated for admission

Internship:
After passing the fourth year final examination a candidate will have to undergo internship for a period of twelve months. The period of twelve months internship will be as per the schedule approved by the MCPHS.

Result: Result will be in term of pass or fail.

Award of degree: The candidate shall be awarded a degree on successful completion of the course including twelve months internship.
