About Physiotherapy:

Physiotherapy means a Physiotherapeutic system of medicine, which includes examination, treatment, advice, and instructions to any person preparatory to or for the purpose of or in connection with movement dysfunction, bodily malfunction, physical disorder, disability, healing, and pain from trauma and disease, physical and mental conditions using physical agents including exercise, mobilization, manipulation, mechanical and electrotherapy, activity and devices or diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Physiotherapy as described by World Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession concerned with human function and movement and maximizing physical potential. It is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation, and rehabilitation. It uses physical approaches to promote, maintain, and restore physical, psychological, and social well-being, taking into account variations in health status.  It is science-based, committed to extending, applying, evaluating, and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs its practice and delivery.

Physiotherapy has first contact status. Referrals from a medical practitioner not being legally or ethically required before Physiotherapy services are provided (World Physiotherapy declaration 1995). World Physiotherapy former WCPT also says that Physiotherapy is a recognized autonomous healthcare profession that works in an open and equal professional partnership with medical practitioners in the care of patients or clients.

Who is a Physiotherapist (PT)?

Becoming a Physiotherapist is no easy journey. Any hopeful must earn a bachelor’s degree in the Physiotherapy field with one-year compulsory internship (5 years) from a government recognized University in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Rehabilitation Council Act 2018 entitled Physiotherapist as "Practitioner" and declared independent practice. Physiotherapists are entitled "Dr" to write before their names along with identity that is protected by legal proceedings.

What can Physiotherapists do?

WHO states, Physiotherapists assess, plan, and implement rehabilitative programs that improve or restore human motor functions, maximize movement ability, relieve pain syndromes, and treat or prevent physical challenges associated with injuries, diseases, and other impairments (ISCO, 2008). Physiotherapists treat diseases or impairments affecting the muscles, bones, joints, nervous system, heart, circulation, and lungs. They are autonomous professionals to identify and diagnose impairments in physical, psychological, occupational, and social context, and serves through health promotion, preventative healthcare, treatment, and rehabilitation using a variety of physical, electro-physical, cognitive, and pharmacological agents.

Clinical Specialities:

Because the body of knowledge of physiotherapy is quite large, PTs tend to specialize in specific clinical areas. These include:

Physiotherapist’s Role in Patient Care:

Physiotherapists have an evolving role in patient care to maximize their clients’ quality of life by addressing physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being when age, injury, disease, disorders, conditions, or environmental factors impede movement, mobility, and function. The future of physiotherapy continues to evolve, leveraging technology and evidence-based treatments for improved efficiency and effectiveness to manage pain.

Qualifications of Physiotherapists:

Physiotherapists are university-qualified and professionally trained to:

  • Conduct a thorough examination/assessment of the patient/client or the specific needs of a client group.
  • Evaluate the findings from the examination/assessment to make clinical judgments regarding patients/clients.
  • Formulate a comprehensive diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan based on the assessment and evaluation of the patient’s condition.

Overview of Physiotherapy Department of MCPHS:

The Physiotherapy Department of Mymensingh College of Physiotherapy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) was established in 2022 aiming to produce highly qualified and skilled Physiotherapy professionals to provide quality health care services to the people of the country and global context in the sector of health and Rehabilitation. At present, the department is offering 4 years Bachelor degree in Physiotherapy with 01-year compulsory internship under the Faculty of Medicine affiliated to the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

MCPHS is the academic institute of Bela Health and Education Foundation (BHEF) which offers Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy along with other courses like Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Therapy. Students of MCPHS have a good external exposure while on clinical placements in the world-renowned Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, Enam Medical College and Hospital, National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) and many other country renowned institutions. MCPHS has also signed MoU with the different National and International Institutions (Jashore University of Science and Technology, Assam Down Town University, India, etc.) to exchange academic knowledge among the students and faculty members.

MCPHS has its own Community Rehabilitation Hospital named Bela Rehabilitation Solution Point (BRSP) at Dhaka and Mymensingh, where students have the opportunity to work with musculoskeletal, neurological, pediatric, Cardiopulmonary and women’s health conditions.

Facilities of MCPHS:

MCPHS provides its students with a clean, spacious and organized campus with modern teaching facilities. The classes are supported by modern teaching technologies. ASSESSMENT PRINCIPLES FOR INDIVIDUAL SUBJECTS:

Assessment procedures are an integral part of the structure of the course and all modules of the course will be assessed. As the underlying rationale for the assessment of the student undertaking the Bachelor of Physiotherapy is to produce a Physiotherapist who is competent in solving clinical Physiotherapy problems the assessment strategies target initially the basic components of that skill, and finally the skill in its entirety.

To achieve this application of theory to practice are of the almost importance together with the need for the student to recognise the input of other disciplines and professions for the benefit of the client. Assessment of the student aims to produce a graduate student who is ready to work as a competent physiotherapist.

The approach to assessments on the course recognises the above through assessing the student in diverse but appropriate ways. Assessment is by written, oral/practical, course work/dissertation, clinical practice and skills, competencies, presentations, and group work in both Sessional and university examinations. A student must attend at least 80% in each subject of the course in order to send up the university examination.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PROGRESSION:

Pass marks 50 % in each method of assessment in each subject.

The student must pass all subjects in each year in order to progress to the next year. Failure to meet this requirement would normally result in the student having to re-sit the subject and/or the year.

The student must pass all the subjects in year 4 of the course in order to be awarded in Bachelor of Physiotherapy. The students admitted to the course shall attend such lecture classes, practical classes, seminar, and demonstration according to the course curriculum approved by the university.

Admission:
Usually, the admission circular is available on the website, Newspaper, Facebook, and the notice board of the MCPHS.

Admission Requirements:

Eligibility for Application:

  • The applicant must have passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (H.S.C) or the examination of equal status in science group with Biology, Physics and Chemistry without any grace mark and have to secure the grade point at least 8.0 (Eight) in total. The candidate must have minimum grade point 3.5 separately.
  • However, the criteria cannot be contradictory to the rules and practice of Faculty of Medicine of the University of Dhaka.

Admission test and interview:

Students have to appear in admission test which is usually held in campus.  After qualifying the admission test a candidate will have to undergo medical and physical examination by the medical board. Then, the medical board will give medical certificate on which his/her admission shall be decided. Students, on the basis of merit in admission test and medical certificate will be selected as successful candidate. Thus he/ she will be nominated for admission
